Tower Hamlets is an inner London borough. The borough has no designated greenbelt land within its 1,976 hectare (7.63 square mile) area. However, 7.60% of the borough is Metropolitan Open Land.

The borough has 57 conservation areas, with a total area of around 653.04 hectares. That's around 33.05% of the borough's total area.

The council is currently under no overall control and in 2018 had an approximate population of 317,710.

Tower Hamlets's most recent Local Plan was adopted on 15 January 2020.

Small Sites

In the 2018 draft replacement London Plan, Tower Hamlets's housing target for small sites (below 0.25Ha) was 5,660—16.12% of its total requirement. In the adopted version of the plan this has been changed to 5,280 which is a reduction of 6.71%.
